The J. DeWeese Carter Center, located in Kent County, is a secure detention facility for 27 youth. The Carter Center provides emergency detention facilities to the nine counties of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Opened in August 1982, the Center was named for the Honorable J. DeWeese Carter (1904-1977) who served on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals in the 1970s.
