Food of the Month ​

Each month, Department of Juvenile Services Director of Food and Nutrition Patricia Faught and her staff develop a Food of the Month theme for Juvenile Services food managers in the facility cafeterias. The purpose of the Food of the Month is to promote nutrition within department youths' diet. This food item is chosen based on consideration of and correlation to the traditions of different ethnic Heritage Months.

Food of the Month - October 2018

Apples 

Celebrate National Apple Month! Try one of the over 2500 varieties of apples grown in the US. Apple is a “superfruit” for everyone. The health benefit of apples were first recorded as early as medieval times, giving rise to an old English saying “Ate an apfel avore gwain to bed makes the doctor beg his bread,” and it’s modern day variation, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” So visit a Maryland apple orchard and pick your own apples to share with the apple of your eye. Improve your health all month by consuming apply-delicious nutrients which may help you as follows:

  • Helps to develop a healthier smile: chewing on an apple can stimulate saliva production and lower the level of bacteria in your mouth. So a healthier smile is really just a bite away.
  • Boosts your energy: apples make great snacks and can give you an extra energy boost.
  • Improves digestion: thanks to the fiber content of apples, including them into your day could help better regulate your digestive tract.
  • Maintain a healthier weight: apples are rich in fiber which can help you feel full without consuming too many extra calories.
